This policy explains what information plain.tips (“plain.tips,” “we,” “us”) collects when you visit https://plain.tips, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

  1. Information you give us:
    1. Messages you send through our contact form, such as your name, email address and the text of your message.
    2. Comments you post, if comments are open on a page: the name and email address you enter, any website you add, and your comment. Your name, website and comment may be shown publicly. Your email address isn’t published.
  2. Information collected automatically: IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, referring pages, and dates and times of visits. This is collected through cookies and similar technologies (see section 3).

2. How we use information

  1. To publish and improve our guides and tips.
  2. To answer your messages, tips, corrections and questions.
  3. To show and moderate comments, and to filter spam.
  4. To understand how the site is used (analytics).
  5. To show advertising (see section 3).
  6. To prevent fraud and abuse, keep the site secure, and comply with the law.

We don’t sell your personal information for money.

3. Cookies, advertising and analytics

  1. Google AdSense and third-party ads: we use Google AdSense to show ads. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies lets Google and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. Other third-party vendors or ad networks may also use cookies to serve ads on our site.
  2. Personalized ads and your choices:
    1. Opt out of personalized advertising from Google at Google Ads Settings.
    2. Opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices (US), or www.youronlinechoices.eu (EEA/UK).
    3. Learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
  3. Google Analytics: we use Google Analytics to measure site traffic and usage. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to collect information such as pages viewed and approximate location. Learn more at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can opt out with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
  4. Site cookies: if you tick the box when you leave a comment, your browser saves your name, email address and website so you don’t have to enter them again. Google’s advertising and analytics cookies are described above.
  5. Managing cookies: most browsers let you block or delete cookies. Blocking some cookies may stop parts of the site from working.

4. Your choices

You can opt out of personalized advertising through Google Ads Settings (see section 3), and you can block or delete cookies in your browser.

5. Visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland

  1. Legal bases: we process personal data for our legitimate interests (running, securing and funding the site, and answering messages); to meet legal obligations; and on your consent where the law requires it.
  2. Your rights: you may have the right to access, correct, delete or port your data; to restrict or object to processing; to withdraw consent at any time; and to complain to your local data protection authority.
  3. International transfers: our service providers (such as Google and our hosting provider) may process data in the United States and other countries.

6. US state privacy rights

Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and other states with consumer privacy laws), you may have the right to:

  1. Know and access the personal information we hold about you.
  2. Correct inaccurate personal information.
  3. Delete personal information.
  4. Get a portable copy of your information.
  5. Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and targeted (cross-context behavioral) advertising. Some laws treat advertising cookies as a “sale” or “sharing”. To opt out, use Google Ads Settings (section 3), or contact us (section 10).
  6. Not be discriminated against for using these rights.
  7. Appeal our decision on your request, where your state law provides for it.

To make a request, contact us (section 10). We may need to verify your request before acting on it. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows.

  4. Business transfers: if the site is sold or merged, information may transfer to the new owner under this policy.

8. Data retention and security

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above. For example, we keep contact form messages as long as needed to handle them, and published comments until they’re removed. We use reasonable safeguards, but no website can promise perfect security.

9. Children’s privacy

plain.tips is a general-audience site and isn’t directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
